At the NHS NWLA we have worked in the system leadership development space for over a decade, to provide our members with the ever-evolving support and guidance needed to successfully navigate system leadership development.

This offer has been commissioned to directly support senior leaders across the North West (including but not exclusive to NHS Organisation Board and Sub Board post-holders, Executive and Governing Body Leads, Primary Care Network senior leadership teams and those working across system level roles) if you would like to discuss access further please contact us at nwla.leadership@nhs.net 

The insights received from members have helped to shape our next generation of system leadership development offers in the North West.

Launched this year is a suite of new System Leadership Modules which members can access either independently or as a result of the Development Centre. Please see below a list of the current modules that are available, do click on the title of each module to view the details of each:

Please note, these modules are aimed at leaders working across systems who are in a position to share their experiences of system leadership.
  • Effective Chairing Skills - Learn clear guidelines on best practice in the preparation, planning and structure of meetings to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Handling Challenging Conversations - Learn how to apply sound psychological theory and practices to make a real difference in personal performance in challenging communications.
  • Increasing Resilience in Leadership - Whilst building on personal strengths, the workshop enables you to identify and address the internal barriers which may be holding you back from achieving success when acting at (or preparing to act at) a more senior level  e.g. governing body/ board level. 
  • Influencing Beyond Your Role - to explore how to work with complex relationships within teams and across organisations. Focus upon exploring ways to lead change that are both effective and compassionate.
  • Innovation and Creative Thinking - an extremely interactive module where you will have the time and space to work on practical exercises aimed at increasing innovative and creative thinking in the evolving health and social care landscape.
  • Leading with Courage and Compassion - You will have the opportunity to reflect on your values, your authenticity and how you demonstrate compassion in your leadership role - along with how you transmit this through to your colleagues.
  • Media Skills - develop skills and expertise for speaking with the media and wider public audiences.
  • Managing Complexity - To explore and apply complexity theory and systems thinking to tackle wicked issues and lead effective system working.
  • Population Health - Explore strategic decision making and the use of population health data as an enabler. Focus upon health inequalities and equal system ownership.
  • Public Narrative as a Practice of System Leadership - Explore how public narrative works: values, emotion & story structure.  Focus upon the “why” and the art of translating values into action through stories to shape a compelling collective narrative for system change.
  • Understanding and Working With Power - To explore the dynamics of power in systems and how to work with and use power effectively and compassionately. 
  • Working in a Political Environment To understand what working in a political environment involves and develop strategies and tools to lead effectively in a political context
