The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) is a multi-award winning fast-track graduate scheme providing mentoring, support and high quality non-clinical training over around two years to those wanting to develop their career in the health service, with the opportunity to become successful leaders in the NHS; while helping to sustain the NHS talent pipeline.

If joining the GMTS in the North West, trainees will specialise in one of four areas:

  • General Management
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Health Informatics

Over the course of two years (or two and a half years for Finance trainees) trainees undertake two placements within NHS host organisations, complete a PGDip in Healthcare Leadership, and can undertake additional professional qualifications within their specialist areas.  In addition to this, trainees also complete an eight week flexi-placement chosen by them. Recruitment of trainees is managed by the NHS Leadership Academy.

As a Trainee on the GMTS you will develop skills, knowledge and confidence to lead the NHS through its transformation into a more efficient and successful healthcare service.

On the GMTS recruitment website, you can find information about the entry requirements and hear first-hand accounts about life on the graduate scheme.

Hosting a trainee is a way to bring new thinking and a fresh perspective to your organisation. While the North West system is facing a period of significant change and new challenges, bringing in a graduate trainee can help fuel innovation and problem-solving, helping you find more efficient ways to improve patient care and outcomes. Trainees are also part of a vital talent pipeline for our region, helping us effectively develop our future leaders.

To provide high quality placements for trainees on the GMTS, organisations are encouraged to take a collaborative and system-focussed approach, with a lead host organisation leading on the submission of information on behalf of a partnership or collaborative. A partnership of organisations may submit a joint bid to offer a graduate exposure to the wider system.

If you would like to be informed when the application process to host trainees is open, or if you have any questions about the scheme please contact us at

Host organisations will be supported by the regional GMTS team in developing their placement and preparing to host a trainee:

  • Information sessions
  • Programme and Placement Manager training
  • Resources and FAQs

A key component of the Scheme is an eight-week flexi placement which enables trainees to gain work experience outside of their two main placements. We are aware that there are lots of organisations in the North West which could offer trainees a fantastic insight into the health and care system, and which could benefit from an additional resource for eight weeks. With trainees specialising in Finance, General Management, HR and Informatics, we would be delighted to hear from you if you have a great idea for a placement.

See our flexi-placement background information for further details, and get in touch at to express interest in becoming a flexi-placement host.

We will share the proposals with trainees for their consideration when they are seeking a flexi placement. General Management, HR and Informatics placements take place in March or September and Finance flexi placements in January or July. If you need any more information at this stage, please do not hesitate to contact us.
