The NHS NWLA aim is always to support our senior leaders by providing helpful and practical interventions that assist with real world challenges. We are currently developing an offer around the required skills and expertise for speaking with the media and wider public audiences.

Remote Media Interview skills

This virtual media workshop will build confidence and ensure that you feel comfortable and confident in all future dealings with the media. 

The Content will cover:

  • How to plan and prepare for an interview regardless of the type, ie. digital, live, press, radio or TV.
  • How to communicate and be clear with your messaging, using your voice and tone to deliver confident and authoritative interviews.
  • Self preservation, how to take control of an interview and stay on point with your messaging.
  • How to handle difficult conversation and potential challenging questions from the interviewer.
  • Protect and enhancing yours and the organisations reputation.

This half day virtual workshop will be highly practical and fully tailored with individual scenarios devised for each participant.

Media interview skills

Whether a media novice or well versed in media relations, getting the message right with the media can be a real challenge – getting it wrong is just not an option.  This workshop will give you the skills needed to face the media with energy, enthusiasm and confidence

The Content will cover:

Presenting with Power, Impact and Empathy

This full day face to face interactive workshop will hone and enhance your skills when speaking at conferences or public meetings.  You will learn techniques that will help you speak and present with impact, assurance, and empathy.

You will learn how to capture the audience’s attention, maintain their interest and inspire them.  Using techniques to show how to make the seemingly mundane interesting and show how to develop “dry data” into real stories that inspire and move your audience.

You will learn how to handle all aspects of public speaking, from developing key messages, to handling difficult questions and dealing with challenging behaviour.  You will be shown how to simplify your messages and discuss these clearly and reasonably.  Also showing you how to find and develop areas of consensus and harmony, despite potential strong differences of opinion.  Developing techniques for reducing nerves, as well as demonstrating how to relax under pressure.   The workshop will empower you with the skills that you need to handle all types of presentations and public speaking events with confidence and control.

Public Speaking and Presentation Skills

This media workshop will give executive spokespeople the tool to enable the delivery of consistently clear messaging about the organisation, activities and opinions to the media, partners, stakeholders and the general public.

There will be a focus on:

  • Skills that you need to engage proactively with modern media, exploring how the pandemic and technology has changed, and is changing, how the media works today.
  • How to handle all aspects of public speaking, from developing your key messages, to handling difficult questions and dealing with challenges.
  • The importance of social media activities, from current and historic posts from various platforms, managing personal and professional reputations.
  • Practical media interviews, where you will take part in a series of radio, zoom and television interviews, and how to prepare, plan and take control.
  • Developing techniques for reducing nerves and how to relax in pressurised situations.
  • The transfer of media skills and applying them to public speaking.

This proactive workshop is delivered over a full day with each participant having plenty of time to enable 1:1 tuition.

Challenging Media Workshop

This face to face workshop is designed to give you the skills to react quickly and communicate confidently when a challenge strikes to reassure the public and protect your organisational reputation.  This highly practical workshop is designed for executive spokespeople who may be faced with a potential challenge at very short notice.

This day will be tailored to cover specific issues and meet exact requirements, empowering you with the skills you need to handle a media challenge.  This training is highly practical and you will have the opportunity to take part in ‘real life’ print, radio and TV interviews.

The workshop will cover both theory and practical tools to prepare you for almost every eventuality connected with a challenge issue as well as provide you with the tools to conduct successful media relations for the future.

You will take part in ‘real life’ print, radio and TV interviews and will see how to prepare, plan and take control of an interview.  Key to this workshop uses ‘Playback Analysis Techniques’ which takes you through a series of challenging interviews, which are recorded and played back for analysis to highlight positives and areas for improvement.

This workshop will build your confidence and ensure you feel comfortable and confident when dealing with journalists and challenging interviews.

Scenarios will be individualised to make this workshop as realistic as possible.

Presenting Skills for Job Interviews

Whether your first job or you have had years in settled employment, going for a job interview can be a daunting prospect.  With the right preparation it can be fun and a great opportunity to showcase your skills and talent.

This practical session will help you to prepare messages about your achievements and abilities as well as polish your presentation skills. 

It will take you through the interview process, from the small talk through to communicating your skills, handling difficult questions, asking relevant questions through to closing an interview successfully.

This workshop will give you the tools to develop your communication skills and ensure that you handle all job interviews with confidence.
