The Healthcare Leadership Model (HLM) was developed to help you become a better leader in your day-to-day role.
The HLM describes what good leaders do, and it will help you develop as a leader by showing you how your leadership behaviours affect the culture and climate you, your colleagues and teams work in. You don’t have to be in a clinical or service setting to use it. And it doesn’t matter whether you work in a team of five or are responsible for 5,000. The model is useful for everyone because it describes the things you can see leaders doing at work and demonstrates how you can develop as a leader.
What is HLM?
The HLM has been developed to create a vision for leadership, one that reflects the very best in care and compassion, alongside a focus on excellence in strategy, vision, direction and engagement.
The model has nine dimensions. Each dimension is made up of a brief description of what the dimension is about and why it is important, along with a section that says ‘what it is not’ to provide further clarity. You’ll be asked questions to help think about how what you do and how you behave affect others. These are the questions that guide leaders’ thoughts and result in effective leadership behaviour.
The HLM focuses on building capability to enable people to meet future challenges; using a range of experiences as a vehicle for individual and organisational learning; acting as a role model for personal development. Leaders champion learning and capability development with many skills that crossover with development utilised during Coaching and Mentoring. These skills, knowledge and experience are used to meet the future needs of the service, develop their own potential, and learn from both success and failure. For further information on Coaching and Mentoring please click here.
Self Assessment and 360 Feedback – Self-Assessment involves completing a questionnaire to generate a report which will help you to assess your leadership behaviours and more fully understand your leadership development. 360 Feedback involves getting confidential feedback from others to help give insight into their perceptions of your leadership abilities and behaviour.
Healthcare Leadership Model (HLM) Facilitator Training - Facilitators are an integral part to the Leadership Model as they ensure the participant understands the report, data and context in which it is offered. If you would like to discuss an internal facilitator training session for your organisation please contact us email@example.com.
Healthcare Leadership Model (HLM) Train the Trainer - Following the evolution of the HLM 360° Feedback Framework and activity across the North West region, the HLM Train the Trainer Programme is a development opportunity to enable current HLM facilitators to become facilitator trainers. If you would like to express interest in this please contact us firstname.lastname@example.org.
Healthcare Leadership Model Observations App
The NHS Leadership Academy have created a digital-only app as an additional resource for leaders across health and care using the Healthcare Leadership Model.
The Healthcare Leadership Model App allows you to record observations about the leadership behaviours that you see around you and explore these using the nine leadership dimensions of the Healthcare Leadership Model. It is free to access and available to all health and care colleagues to help them develop as a leader – even if they are not in a leadership role.
You can add in your own reflections, save and revisit your entries, set goals and reminders and download a summary PDF report for your programme or portfolio. The app can also be used for recording and reflecting on your own leadership behaviours.
The HLM Observations App is for you if you’re:
- Interested in what leadership looks and feels like
- Looking to improve your awareness of leadership behaviour
- From any clinical or non-clinical background
- Aspiring to a leadership role
- A newly qualified clinician
- A healthcare professional student or trainee
- New to/returning to the health and care sector
The web based app is accessible from your desktop, although it has been optimised for mobile devices. Click here to access the app and save the link to your smartphone home screen. If you have any questions or feedback, please email email@example.com
