2019 has been a year for new ventures, transition and leadership innovation.
As we head into 2020, here’s some of our highlights from the past 12 months:
Early in the year we announced the recruitment of our Leadership and OD Enabler roles. The roles were established to be a critical connection point within each of the three North West footprints, to support and shape local leadership development priorities in line with the NHS Long Term Plan. Additional System Talent Lead roles have been established, with funding from Health Education England, to support the North Regional Talent Board in exploring the vision for a system level inclusive talent approach.
Supporting the talent pipeline, the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) expanded its intake from 200 to 500 nationally in 2019, creating opportunities for organisations to host trainees in a range of system focused, innovative placements for 75 new North West trainees.
Ever a key topic, our Building Resilience workshops supported over 300 leaders to develop their confidence and capability in sustaining personal and team resilience, booking up in record time! Our team are proud to have also delivered over 30 development modules across a range of topics to aspirant talent and primary care leaders.
Working with our North West collaborative of leadership development organisations we delivered four expert masterclasses, kicking off in March with Developing a System Mindset – watch the video below. Read our blog from July’s event exploring New Power, and the following September session on People Powered Health and Social Care. In November we had an exclusive look at Outward Mindset; keep an eye out for news of upcoming events in 2020.
Our Primary Care team have been working hard to further develop the offer and support for leaders in primary care, with brand new topics including Change Management and Influencing & Negotiating Skills. A pilot Practice Managers Leadership Development Programme across the three North West footprints saw huge demand with further sessions taking place in the new year.
In May we held our second Festival of Leadership. Following a galvanising keynote, attendees accessed practical developmental workshops that enabled them to build and apply new skills, co-create fresh ideas and explore innovative responses to local and system leadership challenges. Access key learning via our event blog and resources.
Fully launched, following an initial testing phase, our System Leadership Behaviours framework and conversation cards have been ‘going like hot cakes’ providing a practical development tool for our members to put to use in their organisations and teams. Shared at the Festival and also at NHS Expo, we have been gathering feedback from system colleagues on the cards in action; read about demonstrating behaviours with System Leadership for Emerging Leaders, and the innovative 100 System Leaders programme in Lancashire and South Cumbria supported by the tool.
Also launched in 2019 is our Citizen Leadership Toolkit – a unique electronic resource to enable organisations and communities to access the Citizen Leadership programme content and learning materials to support them in delivering the programme within their own localities and across a range of different citizen groups. Requests have been flying in from across the North West and we are excited to hear how the toolkit is being utilised over the coming year.
The Talent Management Maturity Diagnostic Tool, co-created by the NHS Leadership Academy in partnership with NHS organisation stakeholders, is a key development for the NHS and will help organisations to identify where and how they can enhance their talent management practices. To explore the application of the diagnostic, in June we sought expressions of interest to identify early adopters for testing, and selected a range of NHS organisational types and sizes to provide an understanding of the journey from engagement to completion of the tool. Find out more about the talent tool and the North West Talent community of practice.
Supporting transformation and change across the patch, two cohorts completed our System OD and Change Consulting Skills programme over the year. In July our OD networks came together for the first ever North West OD Unconference – read our event blog to find out more about this unique open space approach.
The North West coaching and mentoring community joined us to enhance their knowledge and connect with colleagues at two Network Learning Events; with a focus on self-compassion at our summer event, and support to system leadership in the autumn. New for this year we piloted two Inclusive Mentoring sessions to equip our mentors and mentees with an understanding of an inclusive mentoring approach and using it in practice. Delegates reflected on how these sessions provided a safe and creative space to reflect on their mentoring experience.
A series of ‘NHS Leadership Compact & NHS Best Place to Work’ co-creation events were held across the region in Autumn by the national NHS Leadership Academy. The first co-production round table in the North West saw a diverse mix of senior leaders from across the system engage and inform the development of values and behaviours we want all NHS leaders to sign up to, to make the NHS the best place to work. In November, in celebration of Mary Seacole’s birthday, we shared the impact and learning from the localisation of the national Mary Seacole programme in our North West patches. Read about the experience with local hosts and facilitators in Greater Manchester and in Lancashire and South Cumbria. We were also delighted to welcome Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS Foundation Trust as the new Mary Seacole Local host in Cheshire & Mersey.
All of this supported by our amazing team here at the NHS North West Leadership Academy, who are proud to have made all this possible for our members. We look forward to working with you in the new year!
